Piece of buggy shit compared to SL. Couldn't even get past the name your character screen, as soon as you press enter it takes you to the pick your nickname for an instant and then goes right back to name your character.

Considering you seem to be the only one with this problem (haven't read anyone else with this problem) maybe calling it "buggy shit" isn't really fair since the problem most likely is on your end? Maybe faulty download or something.

This is actually odd, there's truly no av_romance variable it seems, there's aven_romance which is used in another place in the episode. However, on my end, the scene plays out normally even though the console returns a similar error when checking for av_romance.

You need to agree to go on an expedition with her in Episode 8.
