I managed to get to lvl 18 and some decent equipment, but once I get to the Valley of the Giantess, I can't come back from there.

Not sure, I'm having trouble navigating the map myself. Especially at the zone transition tiles. Almost as if the hitbox/detection has become broken.

Sometimes some of the nodes can be a bit iffy with selection try zooming in or clicking slightly around it which also works for me when i have issues selecting a node in the cluster at the end of the second map.
i dont seem to have this issue on the most recent version, try update your jar file if you are not sure.

First Hiro is a femboy or crossdresser if you prefer. He still identifies himself as a boy, hence the male protagonist tag.
