for an engine are all you really need to make just about any game imaginable. They are all open-source and cross-platform. If all you want to make is a visual novel, like many here, then you can also go with

instead. All of these are absolutely free and extremely powerful and have absolutely no troubles at all competing with their commercial rivals when it comes to the solo, or small team, environments you are likely to find yourself working in.

A few other free, open-source and cross-platform tools to consider would include

, a personal desktop wiki program, which is great for compiling your game design documents/notes. If you plan on doing a branching narrative based game,

's node based story editor is about the best tool for roughing out your storylines in advance.

These days the only thing stopping you from making a game is yourself. Don't use the price/availability of lackluster commercial tools as your excuse for not taking the initiative when there are so many amazing free tools at your disposal that will surely be far more than you could possibly need for years to come if you're willing to put in the effort.

There is an add-on for Blender that could help. I'm not the biggest fan of the available morphs and it takes some getting used to, but it can get you a rigged model with a basic material setup:

Not necessarly, Patreon doesn't like 18+ upfront plus it's always a social media platform to share information without necessarly posting images... Not that i have any love for Tumblr, they can go fuck themselves for all i care.

So i just stumbled over this thread, great work and very rich list of ressources, wonderful!

As im a fan of honeyselect and i was just curious what to find after clicking on the link i got to see a japanese blogpost.
Usually i would also always prefer the original website or source to be linked for something, but how is that going to be helpful for everyone not speaking japanese? I also saw a couple other entries in your list that would contain the same problem. Wouldnt it be much more convenient to add an english source on the side? Like: Here thats the origin and here you get to read how it works and what it is?

This is a great thread, its really helpful.

I'm starting to plan my own game/VN at the moment but still unsure on the visual tools to use because from the outside looking in you dont know what kind of results you will be getting.

My project would be very similar to Academy of Fetishes but would like a more graphical apperance similar to Mythic Manor but with a bit more of a RPG Maker dialogue feel (faces/pics while talking).

I think Ren'Py makes a good engine as I have experiance in Game Maker and RPG Maker, Game Maker would be too much work formulating a UI but might be a good second choice if further down the planning route the UI is too crowded, RPG Maker just doesnt have the feel i want from moving around the game world; I would rather point & click than Sprite/3D mix.

3D I am stuck on deciding yet, I have experiance in LightWave 3D (Blender/Maya/3DMax style), TK17, and SourceFilmaker whith a little bit of Honey Select tinkering. Honey Select Studio seems like a strong bet but it completley depends on if the environment can be created for the characters to live in, this is vital as the characters are stuck in the environment where unknown (plan on using a poll system to allow users to somewhat adapt the setting and future releases) situations can arrise; I need full artistic control.

The facility is comprimised of 115 rooms (55 with unique purposes) covering a 10125 metre square area, 14 staff members (1 is you, 5 others core), 26 'inmates' (female/trans/futa) and 5 special guests (all at once, 4 futa anthro & 1 female anthro). Each inmate is currently getting basic details fleshed out including notes on 15 characteristics from height, build and skin colour to bust, genital details and attitude. A scaled facility basic floor plan is designed but yet to do the room contents (28 identical dorms & 18 identical lodgings).

I'm thinking due to the complexity of the facility I will need to resort to Blender use at some point but if the Mythic Manor room internals are anything to go by the tool they used on that (anyone know which it was?) would do more than good enough for this purpose; it would be down to a slightly different UI working to get what I want on screen that maybe Ren'Py couldnt cope with.

For the Git clients, I can no longer recommend Gitkraken. They seem to have gone to trial period now, no more free accounts after 30 days. Using GitAhead in the mean time but really just need to learn the command line git stuff. Would be so much faster
