This is fairly accurate percentage wise. I'll admit, most of the choices are flavor (coming from WTHI, I've learned a valuable lesson about just how much story divergence real choice can cause and end up killing overall progress), but there are small instances where I make pains to have the important choices remembered. Like who you are intimate with obviously, but not just to keep track, but how the characters react to the MC in future dialog.

For instance.

I get that but a VN is a VN after all. Having the choices so, hollow, for lack of a better word, makes them feel as pointless to me as they are being there. Sure I made the choice to do something but as far as the game, and me, is concerned I did it for no other reason than to see a change in the immediate dialogue. A non-choice. They really could be removed and what would change? Very very little unfortunately. They are just breaks in the story to make they play feel like they are doing something. It does track who the player is perusing, but that is just a necessity for these things. I know it's still in the setting things up stage and I'm not saying that to be a dick, but that's how it is now.

Episode 3 Full is out on Subscribestar for all paid tiers. It completes the first Arc of the game, adds the next large sex scene and more, (up to 17 chapters now), and completes the main cast! This is also the point where I'd say if you were waiting to try out the game, this is a good point to jump in.

Avaron1974 Took your advice about trying not to bounce around the view so much this time. :p

Oh, and any of you that are subs or eventually discuss some of the story revelations and foreshadowing I've heavily sprinkled around, it would be appreciated if you kept it in spoilers. Thanks!

I've been waiting for this! I'll give it a try as soon as the latest version makes its way here.

He said, when the game reached nearly 7 GB

Will download tomorrow as vikingfile only gives me poor 150 KB/s currently...
7.02 gig now uncompressed. :S
Optimizing that some more is on the list, especially for the poor android users who have to deal with a lot of compression.

Not looking forward to it... picking out images that don't really matter a lot if compressed is easy, finding the ideal rates and whatnot for the rest... well let's just say I spent nearly a month testing different versions to come up with a standard where I felt semi-comfortable with the quality/size after conversion for the videos.

Genuinely appreciate it hun.

Like I said, it was never going to be a dealbreaker, i'm enjoying the story too much, just really liked a couple of angles during Lil's sex scene (she has an amazing arse) but the scene shifting meant I couldn't "enjoy" it.

Only reason I brought it up is because far too many devs are doing it but fortunately everything else holds up here so I wouldn't have dropped it anyway.

Can't say the same for all games and have dropped a few. If their stories and characters don't keep me hooked then I usually at least have sex scenes to fall back on but not if I can't enjoy those too.

I am loving the whole Lovecraft meets Event Horizon thing going on here

I'd kind of disagree, if only because I feel like there is value in "roleplay" choices.

If you do a run in a dialogue-heavy RPG and pick nothing but "friendly diplomatic" dialogue choices, then do another run and pick nothing but "snarky asshole" choices, it can make the main character feel like a very different person, even if, mechanically, there was no real difference in the outcome of those choices. Even if you aren't altering the path the story is taking, you are altering your own perspective of the character you're playing as. And depending on what sort of choice options are being given (aggressive versus submissive, casual versus professional, impulsive versus cautious, etc), you may have a very different perspective of who that main character is than another player picking radically different choices.

(And yes, this can definitely be a significant factor - you constantly see posts on the boards of different games where people are complaining that the MC is too much of a wuss, and how they wish they could force them to stand up for themselves. Having a scenario where some players can choose those more aggressive confident dialogue options will make them much happier, while other people can still choose more passive, submissive, options if they want to.)

I definitely wouldn't say it falls into kinetic novel territory, because in a kinetic novel you basically have zero control over anything. You're watching someone else's story with someone else's character play out, as if you were just reading a comic or watching a still-frame animation movie). But a story with dialogue choice driven personality shifts is much closer to an actual game, because you are altering how one player perceives the narrative versus how another player does.

But the problem with that sort of "character narrative" is that you kind of need lots of choices to make it work. If the main character has a "default" personality for 99% of the story and is only allowed to express the player's viewpoint extemely rarely, then it basically is just a kinetic novel type character. It's the accumulation of dozens of "minor dialogue" choices that start to make a main character feel more like whatever the player is trying to shape them towards being.

This is why I generally push back against people who complain Telltale Games aren't really games. I watched my nephew play through Tales From the Borderlands, and his version of the story felt much different from mine, even if the story as a whole played out mostly the same. Because we were sort of seeing the main characters in our head very differently, and thus making very different dialogue choices.

If anything, the best visual novel design strategy might be to have a lot of those minor dialogue choices, and then sprinkle in a few more major choices that do shift the narrative (leading to different scenes, different arcs, different characters, etc). It gives you the largest illusion of player agency, while also preventing the entire project from spiraling out of control on the dev side, with literally every decision needing an event flag that triggers some significant scene/story differences later. To continue with the Tales From the Borderlands example, most of the dialogue choices you make only affect the immediate reaction from whoever you're talking to, but occasionally you'll get a choice like "Trust Fiona" or "Trust Jack", which can significantly alter the overall story (leading to almost completely different scenes for half an episode before the two story threads recombine).

Even the most acclaimed narrative games ever made are mostly smoke and mirrors, with player choice being little more than window dressing that shapes the tone of what you say and how other people respond to you, and the player mostly getting railroaded through the exact same story beats no matter what choices they make. Unless you're playing in a D&D campaign where the DM can react to everything you do on the fly and alter the story to fit every choice you make, or reading/playing a Choose Your Own Adventure style story, it's rare that you're ever going to find a game where every single choice leads to radically different story paths.

Thanks for your patience. Time for version 3.01 to be released here! I've updated the viking file links in the OP for all full versions (the rest will be on the nice folks here at f95 when they get around to it). This was a big one, don't think I've done an update this big since the first release.

It contains the full ep 3, some bug fixes, next major sex scene, gallery, fully updated with music, more sounds (though I still have more planned in this regard depending on how people respond to the recent sex scene).

You don't have permission to view the spoiler content. Log in or register now.

I'd also like to ask that those of you who aren't in a position to financially support the game, but would like to do what you can, to consider following at the unpaid tier on subscribestar or X, and spread the word please. (Links in OP or my sig) I may even be able to consider going to steam in early access if I can get some more polish and support, but we'll see.

Thanks!

Some thoughts ace...

1. Again...with the annoying, pointlessly stupid chit-chat in the middle of a creature trying to kill you and you need...to...leave...the...ship...asap. I read your answer last time, it's still fucking annoying.

2. Take the godamn sex sounds out of the music channel....please? You of all people should know renpy has different channels for shit.

3. You're a bastard. Pella better better be off that fucking ship before it went to hell.

1: Eh, I thought I cut back, but which time were you referring to this time?

2. You have no idea how long I tried to fix that shit. Renpy is NOT a fan of disabling or separating sounds attached to the "movie channel", which literally is tied at the hip to master fucking volume. It isn't handled the same was as sounds or music. The only fix I know which I may end up doing for every one of those animations is to cut the sound out of the videos and then play them through the other chans, but then I have to figure out how to time the ones related to things like climaxing, which renpy is also not perfect at because timing is related to your pc processing, not actual freaking time... might as well be like the rift void effect!

3. I know. :D

Nothing game-breaking, but you might want to check what you're telling MacOS (at least) to put in the titlebar. (y)

Wow a mac user! Your the first I've seen play the game... and I have no idea how or why that is there.

I know what it is though, that is the color code that goes into making the title do the neat color fading into darkness.

1. Mainly the talking with Kaylee and especially the 'catch up' with Bobbie once they returned. We're done with that though (for now) but it is jarring. We're being told left, right and center to not hang about...Cthlhu waking up and everyone's like..l;ike break out the rum and play and truth and dare...plenty of time lol.

2. Uggghhh...there's always something to complicate what should be easy eh. I'll forgive you for that then ;)

3. I guessed in the last update she was on the Demeter (nice ref btw...clever heh) but hints in this latest update? Hmmm...*goes off to check*

On work's dime. :)
I don't have any clue what you'd tell Renpy to do different, but the problem is in the Info.plist inside the .app bundle:

In the workplace? :D Watch out for the sex scene, it has sounds you can't turn off without turning down the master! (for now) :D

Ai says it has to do with how mac handles titles, I may be able to fix it by creating a stylized label so the title isn't a string of color changing madness.

1. There was a bit there, I was trying to excuse it with the chair inspection and later handoff and just a quick sit rep update with some humor. I did some small re-tweaking of the Chinami/Umi scene though to cut back!

3. There are at least 5 major hints/foreshadowing but as much in the visuals as the dialog.

Hey Acewinz, my apologies if this has already been asked and answered but what are the chances of a gallery being added? Loving the game so far just would like to be able to "relive" certain scenes

There is one now in the new version (did you make sure you got the 3.01 version from the viking file link? F95 may not have updated the rest yet).
