I have no idea where he's from. I said I wouldn't quit my job for $4k. But that's the thing... people just assume a dev lives somewhere where that's a lot of money. I've seen it so many times. You don't know that. And on top of that, it's not really going to be consistent. Subs could leave after a release and the number drops. Would you really bet your financial security on such flimsy income?
Exactly, besides just because you make 4K doesn't mean you cash out 4K. More like 1K if you're lucky, after buying assets to keep the game fresh and paying your society dues.

$1K lol. You do realise that 99% of the assets used are available for free. If people are paying so much for assets when they are available for free so easily, they have nobody to blame but themselves.

Hes got about 550 subs. Say an average of $10 per person. Thats $5500 per month. Patreon take 8% plus some other smaller fees. So maybe 10%. Still leaves $5000. Hes Canadian so that's CA$7000. Take away tax and other incidentals, he'd still have $CA5000. That's a decent wage - over $1K a week. Im sure he gets tips and gifts too like other devs. Plus a lot of them do custom commission art.

When you can create the game at home leisurely and have no deadline - Not a bad way to earn money.

Somehow, I doubt most of AVN devs are based in the Americas (USA or Canada), and I don't know if Bobbyboy is from there. But to say that 4000$ is not enough to live comfortably without a proper job is insulting to the rest of the world. What are you, buying a new iPhone whenever the screen gets dirty? For comparison, the median monthly pay in my country is somewhere around 1000$ (a comfortable life is only possible with some major caveats, but then again, what country in the world doesn't have this problem for the Average Joe?), so making even 2000$ from Patreon every month would certainly boost my quality of life.

Geez...
Completely agree, 4k a month US is a lot more than most people in the US make. Its disgusting to me that anyone would suggest that is low amount of money to make unless like you said they expect to buy whatever, whenever they want.

Free prime assets are basically nonexistent. I would like to see where you can get a character with hair, that's fully textured, rigged and shapekeyed (both regular and corrective) for free.
You're out of your depth! On here and another famous render site. The best and most popular assets on Daz, are leaked literally days after its been released. Just like VNs.

Hair, character models, morphs, clothing, environments, props, etc. Even Progamerjohnny uses them for his fanart. Do you ever wonder why we see the same models and places so often in VNs? You're on a pirate site yet you seem to forget that it incorporates all facets, not just the game itself.

And you're assuming the worst - so the real answer is probably somewhere in the middle.

Also consider, that 547 Patrons listed on his page includes everone on the free tier (like me).
So not only are you naive but also illiterate. Some of the people on this forum shouldn't be allowed near a keyboard

See the difference between total members and paid members lol.

Oh shit, you're right.
I didn't look at the page long enough to read it in full.

More importantly though, the name calling isn't really very nice.
Why are you so angry kiddo? Calm down.

First off, I agree that Patreon income is not stable enough for myself personally (I would still maintain a simple day job at that point), but I took issue more with the statement that a regular income of around 4000$ would not be enough for the average person to live comfortably. When in fact, in most of the world, that kind of income would be a godsend.

This is not me saying that Bobbyboy should quit his day job and focus on East Block full time, just that 4k$ should be plenty - even accounting for money "spent" investing into game development itself.

I don't think I ever said that, though... and it's highly contextual on where someone lives. All I said was that I wouldn't quit my job for that amount, because for me, that's low. A three bedroom apartment where I live would be roughly $2.8K/month. Nearby areas even higher. The main point is, though, unless someone here knows Bobby's financial situation, how can we tell what's enough for him to quit a regular job and do this full-time?

I think we all agree that he deserves all the Money he makes and more as long as he puts out the Quality like he did in his last release...period.
For me the Dev Interacts directly with all his Patreons and that is also Important for me.
I also saw that some of his Patreons canceled there subscriptions because they got it sooner here than on Patreon, I can understand that to some extent they are pissed, but that is not the Devs fault, and this happend a couple of times to me also at other Developers, but I didn't cancel them either, because I`m supporting the Dev for further development, I even started support again after the Game was Leaked here, because I loved that release for it`s action.
I must say that I also cancel some of them again if a release sucks because I`m supporting up to 10 Developers every month and I`m not a millionaire.
But Bobbyboy is a regular that I support very often.
Just my two bits.

Yeah, some areas just cost more to live in, even in the same country or even city, and it has nothing to do with quality, I live in a 2 story, 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom apartment which is only around €700/month, you probably live in a very expensive area.

And even that is damn expensive to some mind you...

4k a month is well below the US national average. That 4k is also not 4k, scratch off at least 600 for taxes. Where I live, and it's not a big city, average rent for a 1-2 bedroom apartment is 2k. Add other bills, electric, water, internet, car payments, groceries. Not starving, but probably living check to check. People are indeed being weird.
