How i see it, this is never a problem of not meeting deadlines that are set.

The fact is, I do this by myself and I don’t have anyone to rely on when life gets in the way or things go wrong. I think all things considered, this is the better approach.

For real - this is the way that problem should be solved. That absent person, a helper for the project, with correspondent level of trust and qualification - should be found. One may say - i don't have money to pay him, because (probably, idk) this game development brought not much profit. But that's the point where this recursive cycle begins:

10 the game brings too little money so a single dev can't hire a trusted and professional helper;
20 a single dev have to continue to make development by his own;
30 shit happens irl of a single dev in the project, and causes delays instead of update;
40 so even players who do like the game - had to unsubscribe, and that loss of fans is making profit from the project even less than before;
50 goto 10;

So, if one way or another, to give it a try to find that helper-person - that means that updates are going to be released more often, at same or even in better lvl of quality, and 1st what will happen - it will bring back all those fellows who had to unsubscribe because of massive delays, it will bring more money profit, probably a second helper could be hired then, and quality and update time will be better and better, and that's how the cycle of never ending delays in a single dev project can be broke down; Isn't it?

Let's do the math.
I take numbers from just imagination, let's say, for example, that by now the game brings as little as 100$ profit, because of massive delays. If to invest, idk, let's imagine like 500$ to hire a helper to release just the 1st update ever - in time - it will be a breaking news and lots of ex-subscribers will be back. That will make profit, like 800$, so it will bring back investment for hiring the helper, and triple income for personal needs motivation for upgrading the quality of development even more, than it was before, as little as 100$ on a path of single developer who can only produce delays at solo, but was not able to make updates in time, when was alone. Right?
