Games with choice and branching are fun. However a game without any choices, where the author just tells the story they want to tell is infinitely better than games with a bunch of meaningless choices that are just there for the sake of choices.

Sandboxes are the only thing I tend to lose my temper with (these days I simply ignore ones with the sandbox tag). Choice is good as long as it's intuitive and actually makes a difference in outcomes, as then you can guide your own story rather than be stuck with the one you are given (particularly if you are picky with who you fuck and how in porno VNs). Riding a Harley is far more fun than riding a train. But I get it, short KN's are easier to do as a first project to learn with rather than having to deal with a bunch of variables and if/thens.

A visual novel doesn't have to have choices. As long as it is a story with visuals, it qualifies. Kinetic Novel just outright states that it's a visual novel without choice.
