I already tounched on her likeability and "villain" staus, so I won't repeat myself there. But she didn't just "catch feelimgs", she willingly and purposely betrayed someone she says she loves, which goes quite a bit deeper. I will add that these things don't her a bad character for the story. On the the contrary; as you said, she's why were here. How is Mary unlikable? She is literally the reason this game gets the support it does. Mary doesnt have to change anything because she is the prize they are battling for. She is not a villain or evil because she ended up catching feelings for the older playboy who knows how to treat her and not the skinny, wimpy, narrowminded introvert. The only reason so many of you people sympathize with Satoshi is because you are just like him in real life. I think Mary is a great character because there are actually a ton of women out there that are just like her.
As for sympathizing, you don't need to be like someone to sympathize with their situation. Satoshi is a bit oblivious, but he does seem to truly love Mary and wants to make her happy, but had been taking their relationship for granted up until then. I sympathize with that, and that doesn't detract from the story at all, but instead gives it a bit more depth.
