Well, as far as I am concerned - you never immerse yourself in these games, you see it more as a spectator (correct me If I am wrong), which in turn might make you see things differently and makes it easier for you to deal with such characters/situations.
I know the difference, because I switch my playing modes from time to time
![Laugh  ](data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7)
.
Like, for example, when I play games focused on fetishes I am not a fan of (lesbian, sharing etc...), or games without appealing story where you just fuck everything that moves and collect them all in the end, I simply watch those games as some movie, just as if I went to the cinema. Obviously I don't have any problems in this mode.
Entirely different situation when I immerse myself - I dive into this universe and let emotions whatever they are go through me, so if some characters act like jerks - it's frustrating/annoying... and vice versa.
I would assume that in real life you wouldn't be happy if someone deceived you for a very long period of time for whatever reasons, I might be wrong of course. It definitely would be a no go for me, or at least it would be legit for me to at least bitch about it and tell the person that it's a dick move or whatever...
