All of the 0.1, 0.0.1 'pre-alpha', and prologue demo, games that parade across this site is the main reason I don't even bother looking at a 'new' game that I see.
The premise of the game could be phenomenal, the artwork/CG could be fantastic with hot, sexy, characters, but the moment I see 'initial demo' or v0.01, I tend to give it a hard pass. Mostly because those games never go past their initial version.

If the setting interests me or the story interests me, I will put them on the watch list and come back in a month or two. I do, occasionally, play some of those initial, 0.0.1 games, but it's pretty rare.

All this tells is that there are a lot of people trying to make porn games.
And that many apparently (for whatever reason) do not succeed in making it (usually because it's too difficult/troublesome than expected or that it makes less money than desired).

But it also shows that it's never been easier to make porn games, which by itself is a not a bad thing.
The Western porn gaming market is still in its early stages. Sure, 18+ games with porn content have been around for a long time, but a real commercial market has only recently opened up.
It just takes some time for acclimatization.

I think Ren'py 3DCG and some other tags are innocent.

And free market is never about "only have good products on the market". Competition & bad products are essential and inevitable part. There also many trash game on STEAM or DLSite.

I'd take any day a western unfinished game that at least explores new fetishes/ideas and delivers at least an enjoyable experience for what content they're worth, rather than one of those lame, samey 1-2 stars japanese games that keep popping up recently and rehashing the same old boring rape/ntr/orc setting with no enticing gameplay or plot and samey anime artstyle.

As a translator, if you're talking about Japanese games popping up on here in particular, what that says to me is that most Japanese translators on here are people who like those rape/ntr/orc games, so those are the projects that are getting picked/supported :geek:

I'm not into that, and I can't lie and say my eyes don't glaze over looking at the translation request area from the sameyness of it all (mostly the same story for western releases tbh), but each translation is a pretty massive undertaking. It really wouldn't surprise me if some of the games popping up were literally published years ago and are only now getting an english fan translation. I don't know this for certain, mind you, but given how long a game can languish in the back pages of Translation Requests without getting picked up, or possibly even never gets a request, as I said; it would not surprise me lol

Understandable but at the very same time, if everybody is doing this then it can only make everything worse.

If nobody tries to play new games, no wonder they got abandoned.

I like the irony of putting a bunch of 0.1 aboned tags to whine about porn games along with faces from Summertime Saga and Light of my Light, two pretty successful games making more money than most of us.
Summertime saga has obviously horrid sameface issue and LomL had So repulsive character designs that mods decided to ban critique of them for whatever reason.

If I had to talk about the issues of state porn gaming I would say there are two:

1º New developers being overly ambitious: If it's your first game try to make something more simple and short, developing a game isn't exactly easy and even more when you are just starting you will feel the need to change many things, solve bugs and detect other issues, it is bound to happen, so start with a game that you expect people to complete in 2-4 hours at most.

After you have a decent experience you can improve it and be more ambitious, now you have more experience and a complete game, this is very valuable.

2º Too much feedback from players: Many people comment constantly on what they like or not, limiting the developer's vision of their project, there isn't anything more weird that characters acting out of their character so that a certain scene is made optional and I get it, we all have likes and dislikes but I believe that we need a basic tolerance to fetishes that we don't personally like.

it is ok if you really like just 1% of total games
we don't like even every AAA games AAA films and AAA tv-series. Why we should like every niche porn games?

among all porn games i play, i think only GGGB and Our Red String have mature and interesting enough to follow plot
other have "supernatural", "vampire", "magic", schoolboy incest harem, "hobos" or just blunt Gary Stu

So evakiss top one adult game creator on patreon? nah, now she not even in top 50.
top one "schoolboy incest harem" by DarkCookie

so why we should get nice games?

I see this issue in a lot of mediums where whats artisiticly good isn't necessarily whats profitable. It sucks, but it isn't surprising.

It's worse than that.

Like you said, it lead to some games being abandoned because their author think that it's apparently not interesting. But it also lead for more shitty games to persist over time.
When only desperate players are testing the early versions, don't be surprised if they will give it 5 stars. And if they give it 5 stars, don't be surprised when the author tell you to shut the fuck up when, after the fifth update, you come to say that he should change this, or improve that.
