I have not been playing this game for a long time, so I don't really know the developer well enough, but, having read the post shared here, I think he seems pretty straightforward and honest as to the current state of the game and the reasons for the delay.
The problem with game delays, in my view, comes when they happen every month, when developers resort to shielding themselves behind private life issues or mysteriously recurrent development setbacks in order to provide an acceptable excuse for those constant delays or poor updates in terms of content. And we all know several examples of that. But If the developer is willing to release an incomplete version of the game while promising to deliver the rest within a few days, I don't think much (reasonable) criticism can be levelled against him.
