Because manipulation take some of the blame away from the woman. Obviously, it depends on how strong the manipulation is. If it's brainwashing for example, then she isn't actually cheating, because she is not in control of her actions. It also takes the focus away from the woman, and more to the "rival"
The manipulation in This game isn't that bad, but I'd much rather the heroine cheat on her own free will.

When I've first heard this I called bs, but actually it might be a thing.
(but I've also seen similar things in the past for other games, which actually turned out to be bs, and the dev was just lying)

It's not BS. Each build has a different code linked to the Patreon that receives it. If it appears leaked, I know exactly who it came from. It's that simple.
