Unbroken by STWADev
I have to admit that I went into this one with a little trepidation, as I didn’t really get on with The Author, by the same dev. To me though, this does not feel like it’s a game created by the same person/team, it’s far superior on every level.
I like a story that allows you to properly get to know the characters, and this does such a good job by drip-feeding in little bits of backstory through either flashbacks or just conversation between two people. You can see a real dark side to some of that history as well, and the long-lasting effects things can have on a person’s life and mental health. Unbroken manages to convey all that without the game itself getting bogged down, and I think it’s a great bit of tightrope walking here to pull that off.
I’m not much of a fan of fight mechanics in games, but the story around the fights, and the importance the sport has on several characters is well-enough handled that I can ignore it. The actual fights themselves give the option to “simulate” them though, which is perfect for me. I also like how there are little bits of realism dotted through the training and fighting aspects, with injuries and gamesmanship, and also how you have to balance things when playing, as ignoring training to go chase the girls at every opportunity will obviously have an impact when it comes to fight day.
Talking of the girls, my one downer here is that there’s something about most of them that doesn’t work for me. Whether it’s the hair (Amrit, Vi), the balloon tits (Elspeth, Vi), the weird eyes (Jennifer), or something else, I generally found myself loving the girls for who they are, but not liking their looks quite as much. The build-up of relationships is mostly good, and the mechanics are there in the background to show that choices will have consequences, be they good or bad. I’m not looking forward to the point of having to pick girls, because at the moment, everyone seems aware of everyone else, and there’s jealousy, but acceptance, and I’m not sure for how much longer that will be the case.
Overall, this is a great game to play, and even on a single save (rather than a save for each LI), there’s a lot of content to get through. The graphics look great (with the exception of some of the animations, which I think are sometimes downright terrible), the girls are great (with the caveats in the above paragraph), and it’s definitely one that I’ll look forward to continuing. Unbroken is taking a deserved place in my top ten, at the expense of The Beautiful Game (which only managed a short stint in the top ten itself!).
