I think the story is about honesty and how it's absence can lead to one's downfall
Let's start with Dan : he is dishonest . To his own cuckold nature , his desire of seeing his wife's degradation . He wants to be cuckolded by Lester but also a facade of control
Sarah is even more dishonest .about her growing addiction for Lester since chapter 5 . She is a whore and loves Lester but won't admit it and makes all sorts of justifications in her mind like needing "relief" and it's all "just sex talk " with Lester.
Only character that is true to himself and others even while lying is lester .he wants to replace /humiliate dan and impregnate Sarah . He already stated to Dan that he will change her
Ulimately Lester wins and the couple fall which could have been avoided if they were honest since start

In (#Ascending_Lauren) we have to see the profile of the couple, they have been married for 28 years. The husband is 59 years old and the wife is 48 years old. Unlike Dan and Sarah, a young couple with young children.
