I am not sure what DS is thinking and I dont think anyone does. Yes, chapter 31 is by far the worst chapter of the series after a somewhat good chapter 30 (I personally enjoyed it). The way I see it is that we dont know anything for sure. Lester hasi been speaking about a lot of variables and how he cant control them but try to predict them. The fact is we dont know those variables. We all assume Mary as the evil bitch whos gonna use what shes seen to kick Sarah to the curb because given their history its the most logical thing to do. However, the most logical thing to do is to call the police and cause a scene to totally humiliate Sarah isnt it?

We actually dont know if shes on Lester’s payroll or not because I think getting the head of HR involved in such a way is to huge of a risk for someone like Lester. Plus he is not above using other women to manipulate the couple as he has done it before with his “gf” at the time. If Mary is indeed working with him, then it would make a great plot twist and it will seal Sarahs entrapment. She cant work in the hospital anymore and Mary will make sure through her network that she doesnt land any job in any hospital in the area anytime soon.

at least thats how I see it. If anyone has any thoughts or corrections lets hear it
My only problem with Mary working with Lester is they have already hated each other. In fact, Lester humiliated Mary in front of Sarah one time, to put her in her place. Also, she wasn't alone, she had new hires with her, she has to set an example, so she must fire Sarah or have no respect from those new hires. Seriously, the only thing I can think of for Lester is to trap Sarah in a tight financial situation in which he has already convinced her that she is the provider, the "mate" that can be there for her financially.

when I mentioned her being on his payroll I didnt necessarily mean he is paying her to do his dirty work, though looking back at it I couldve used a better term. My opinion is she MIGHT be under his control. Him being in IT and with his moral compass he might have found some dirt on her when he got in their systems. The new hires being their as witnesses does complicate things. I do agree with you though that Sarah will be fired, there is no coming back from that. I just think that Marys role will be ensuring Sarah cant get another job, which will push Sarah further to Lester and helps him create the tight financial situation.

Well Sarah depending on Lester for a lot of things has always been Lester's plan and it's the obvious (or spelled out) plot line. But you've made me consider different angles and I'm reluctant to put it out there as it's not something I want to see. However a real plot twist would be that Mary goes to Richard with the evidence of what Sarah did and we already know that Richard is a douche and treats women as beneath him. So he gives Sarah a choice; she can keep her job, as his personal assistant (fuck toy) or she can pack her bags.

Oh no. Another guy fucking Sarah. I can guarantee there'll be a gangbang by Lester's gamer nerd friends sometime in the future.

As I said I'm not in favor of another useless character, but it makes the most sense for why he even wrote him into the story so many chapters ago. And it would be another obstacle for Lester. He gets rid of Otis, only to be replaced by Richard. Again not something I want to see. I think by this point in the series, DS should be focused on resolving all these loose plot threads, instead of creating new ones.

I liked the updates to 30, they were nuanced but made it gel with the overall story. Now as for the alpha of 31. If it'd been a meal, I would have sent it back to the kitchen. It is likely the worst chapter I've read in this series---correction half chapter. Up to Sarah being back at the hospital the chapter was on a good trajectory (except for Dan), but then you spend the back half the chapter telling us that Sarah is willing to put up with Mary and not bitch slap the smug look off her face because she needed the job, and yet turn around and have sex in a public conference room, one in which others had been invited to.

Sarah isn't that fucking stupid, or at least the character development up this point has shown us she wasn't. Yes I get she's under a lot of stress, but she wasn't under the amount of stress necessary to make that dump a decision. She could have invited him to her office and locked the door, the janitor's basement, etc.

I also get the scene was necessary for Sarah to get fired, all according to Lester's plan. To spend 8k words on something that should have been a short scene with a throwaway character, it felt... Pointless.

I agree with you King, we had some major development to Dan's character in 30 and now we get wishy-washy Dan back. After the events of 30 he should have been outraged or broken, but no we get the "Oh that's Sarah being Sarah" Dan again.

I hate to say this, as I've had a lot of respect for DS's writing, but I'm starting to agree with others, that this story has no ending.
also the fact Dan introduces new kinks and drop it in immediately .

This chapter has introduced mother shaming for sara but it will be be dropped again

The story is actually weak but what keeps you going is Lesters Character and well written scenes .(Which are getting repetitive )

And when are we going to see the pregnancy arc ?? When will Sarah and Dan fight ?? When will she finally admit she loves Lester (or does she )

At this point he should finally decide to rush towards the ending cuz the story has lost momentum

Ch 1 was just 3 pages and it set the whole plot and laid out the themes perfectly . To the T .

Nows he's writing more than twenty yet it all doesn't come together satisfactorily . Imagine reading 40 50 pages and yet it fails to entertain you

"Slow burn " stories work when you have the end in sight and you see the character working towards it

Now latel it ain't working no more

No female gets mentioned in this story unless Lester is fucking her, Dons paying public probably want it to happen so you’ll probably get your wish.

Well, not the only reason. Richard, obviously felt he was the smartest man in the room (yes, man, watch why) and he looked down on everyone else, especially the women. He got rid of just about every woman and brought in people , yes, including women, but the women were sub-par and didn't really know their jobs, in that way he controlled that portion of the workplace. He used misogyny to displace women good at their jobs, so he could put incompetent women in their place so he could control them and what they did in the workplace. As far as the men, he only liked what he considered strong men, confident in themselves and their maleness, which is why he liked Lester, plus Lester used the misogyny to talk Richard into putting Sarah under him, thereby humiliating Sarah and putting her in her place, for Richard and coming in like a knight on a white horse to make sure she would still have a job at the hospital and he saved her, now look Sarah, Lester = hero, so Lester = love. Where was Dan during all this to lend support to Sarah, who gives a fuck, after all, Lester = Hero.

Now could Richard say you want your job, then fuck me for it, but there are too many people already involved, including Mary and the new employees. So sorry, Richard, missed your chance, oh by the way, Lester just quit, in solidarity with Sarah, once again Lester = Hero, Lester = Love, especially when he tells her that he is loaded and doesn't need a job to support her and the girls. Lester = Hero, Lester = Love.

Granted you are correct there are a lot of micro-narrative reasons for Richard, but he was only in the one maybe two chapters and then he became a leverage point (I guess that's what I would call it). But you have to look at the hint DS added to Sarah's dream sequence at the beginning of ch 31 "There was something behind Lester's bonfire, a presence darker than the other shadows around it." It could be Richard, but I think we would mostly agree it's either someone at TLG or Chronos that's being hinted at.

Then again maybe I'm just fatigued by the series at this stage and would like things to start narrowing down to a conclusion.
