yes there is, there should be a injured NPC somewhere in the first floor in the dungeon and you must choose to save him. After that you get a quest chain for him as you talk to him in town. Depending on your choices leads to romance. He will be a companion as well so he will make exploring a bit easier.

Have you done the unholy seed research quest line at 2f at the church yet? The brainwashing probably refers to researching the unholy seeds with the professor which leads to the bad end supposedly.
