If you are level 5, you should have learned several spells by now (see p.93 of the walkthrough). You learn them by studying at your desk in your bedroom in the evening. The tiny flame of the candle is a signal that there's a new spell for you to learn.
(If you have reached lvl 5 by editing your save file in an external editor, then the learning system might fail)

I level up going with Eric A LOT, defeating the slime boss and defeating the minatour girl whit a ton of luck ¿Maybe I soft blocked some weird wey? Becoçause I can't read the book, the circule on the floor is on fire and to light up the thing around the circle I need to defeat the goht girl right¿

Mind you, there are several books in the game. One is the one you buy from Sebastian which then appears in your laboratory, the other one is on your desk in your bedroom. The latter you need for learning new spells.

For learning about protective barriers, you need to get past the ghost girl at the tower and meet Melissa. Also potions from Rose can be a huge help.

You can download a decrypter, with that way you can access the game's cg folder, I did it a while ago, I'm going to try to do it to see if it works again.

To activate the event with Melissa you need to approach her on Monday afternoon.

If you do have a ball gag, double check in the future when hitting the optimize tab because the gag is the item with the highest states it will be auto equipment when optimizing

simply your level is not enough.... level 3 should be able to defeat it

She's vulnerable to ice. You can learn the Icy Needles spell when you reach lvl 3. You might also try the potions from Rose if you can afford them.

If you're short op XP for levelling up, you can gain some extra xp by various repeatable actions. See p. 93 of the walkthrough.
At lvl 2 you can learn Sleep, which can also help against tough enemies.
