He professes his love. Something gets in the way such as the 'earlier girl' or 'his special thing' (I cant get you drawn into my puppy saving world). But then in the end his love for her is too great and the obstacle is overcome (usually with him sacrificing or changing something about himself) & then they get to be together.

That's basically Twilight and a billion other stories with this theme I enjoy.
