What trope are you tired of seeing in adult games?

I'm currently doing some writing on a game that is in the very early development stages. I'm putting down the outlines of the first few chapters in between playing some games from F95 and deciding what to do and what not to do.

I'm curious what you think is over-done or so silly it breaks the imagination's connection with a game... so lay it on me. What do you think a game should avoid to help make it a good game, in your opinion?

Not sure if this is really what you're asking for but here are a few things that come to mind for me:

  • I don't like games where the males have a dick that would put a horse to shame and the females have breasts like beachballs superglued to their chests.
  • Try to give the game some semblance of realism - few sisters or mothers are going to jump into bed with their son or brother half an hour after seeing him for the first time in a decade.
  • I know we have to work within certain legal constraints but people don't have zero interest in each other or sexual matters till one nanosecond past their 18th birth date then suddenly magically become sexual deviants with an insatiable appetite.
  • Be very careful using stats in a game, it's quite immersion breaking when your character is a shy little goody two-shoes that wouldn't say boo to a goose with a stat of 9 and suddenly turns into a sexual tyrannosaurus when that stat reaches 10.
A few other general things:
  • As tempting as it can be, don't break the fourth wall - no commentary from unseen unknown characters once the game's begun unless your player characters are supposed to be some sort of lunatics hearing voices in their heads.
  • Unless you're very good at proofreading, get someone else to check for all those typos and inconsistencies that creep into every game while the developer is in hurry to bring their ideas to life.
  • Once you've started creating a game PLEASE finish it - there are far too many abandoned games.
  • Not every character in the game has to be a sexual deviant or desperate for sex with the player character, make some of them easy lays but make the player have to work for some of them - variety ;)
  • If you're developing a sandbox type game, please play it yourself so you can see how grindy it is... a game has to be *really* good to keep players grinding for hours, if it's your own game and you get bored playing it, chances are your players will feel the same.
  • While it can be tempting to keep a game's development going for as long as possible if you're being paid to develop it, after a while players start to get annoyed.

Can I count a genre as a trope?

I'm tired of VNs. Or at least the ultra-common and boring "choose your own adventure" style VNs where all of the images are super generic 3d models customized in DAZ and used to animate boring stories with binary "fuck or not to fuck" pseudo-choices given to the player that ultimately just result in you clicking a button to advance the narrative and look at a few titty pics.

The people who make these should just make CG comics, imo. Save the effort and stop flooding the h-game market with low-effort tripe.

Also kinda tired of incest. What's with everyone wanting to bang their family members?

I am sick of seeing the "horny dude who wants to bone his family" trope
I'm not a fan of "the MC is a manipulative, scheming bastard. But he has a big cock so all is forgiven."
Also, blackmail, mind control, creeping, ultra horny. Anything that goes against respect for other peoples rights to decide, unless there is a big story reason as to why, like they are already mind controlled so the only way to help is to master mind control.

i would like for vanilla options, be a lil more common in adult games.

The lack of adult games. Too often people figure it means taking one of the millions of pornhub videos and presenting it in renpy format with some filler text and game-like games like Black Souls is a rarity.

What is Black Souls?
If you mean Dark Souls I don't think action games like that is a good fit.
Even in Skyrim with sex mods it doesn't fit that well.

Harems should be believable.
The hot thing about harems is not that you get to fuck the women but the interaction between the women.

And don't try to put too many characters in a game. Because in the end, most characters are quite forgettable while at the same time the really good ones don't get enough attention.

Your question's a bit vague. Are we talking about specifically the "adult" portion of adult games or the writing in general? There's a whole lot of things I have to say about characters, but I also want to touch on sex scenes too.

If we're talking about characters:
  1. Male harem protagonist who's only redeeming quality is that they have basic respect for others and common sense (and isn't hideous compared to the other guys). Man, if it was that easy, all of us would be swimming in pussy. It's just lazy writing.
  2. All the love interests are virgins, even the really thirsty ones. Mainly a Japanese trope. Bonus points if they're magically really good at sex right after (or even during) the first time. I feel like virginity is only interesting if you're willing to take your time with it. If it's not that important to the character, then there's no point to it.
  3. Love interests that disrespect the protagonist every other hour. Look, if wanted to be yelled at and degraded, I'd be playing Tower of Trample (unless that's point of your game).
  4. Rivals with polar opposite body types/personalities, and they're actively sabotaging each other. Its comedic effect expires faster than milk on a hot summer day.
  5. Characters that share names with famous characters, people and/or gods. I find it extremely disappointing when a character is only superficially similar to their namesake. People need to stop calling their ace archers Robin or Diana and their battle maidens Athena.
  6. When your furry/monster girl characters are named after the animal/object they are hybrids of. It's easy to remember, but it's also very cartoon-ish. Like you have to wonder if all cat-moms name their daughters Catherine or Felicia or whether your catgirl's mom's a sadist. You ever heard of someone naming their kid Humania or Sapienzo? Me neither.
If we're talking about sex scenes:
  1. Overly flowery words (and whatever the fuck you call that garbage on Fanfiction). Look man, my IQ drops when I'm trying to bust a nut. I'm not going to figure out what your "clever" metaphors and similes mean. Keep it simple. Keep it sensual. Similarly, if the sex scene itself is more descriptive than the story, I'm going to assume you just wanted to write sex scenes and ignore the story.
  2. Time-sensitive events/minigames within a sex scene, and the sex scene ends immediately when you "win." I pray there's a special place in hell for people who do this.
  3. Deep throat, without the gagging. Coupled with a giant dong (which is most games), it just sounds and looks really unnatural.
  4. And related to #3, bad anatomy. A lot of the things people pump out makes me wonder whether they've ever had sex.

Thanks for all the answers. I pretty much feel the same as everyone that's replied.

I've only been playing VNs and adult games for a little while, and I've noticed a lot of things that keep coming up over, and over, and over... genres, story lines, tropes, and other aspects that are just worn thin. I mean, really, less than about two months into playing these kinds of games and I seriously don't ever want to hear the words, "Truth or Dare," again.

Thank you for asking...

I'm afraid some people's fetishes/preferences do play a huge part of others being fed up with seeing them all the time..
There are other reasons, of course; I think logistical limitations are also a huge factor-- incestuous stories may be frequently featured due to that; (you start with enough characters --with only one male character available, of course-- in the same setting, without a need for a lot of backup stories as to how they ended up living together).

I would say though, that if you're a straight, cis-male, with a hetero-normative worldview, then you're probably the target audience of most games here. That will lower your "Arghhhh-inducing" moments to a minimum. Otherwise, well... it will be an "educating" journey for you; to see how the entire "gaming" universe can , literally, revolve around a single dick (a "big, heroic, unstoppable" one, of course ;))

Short/ugly/misoginist MC in domination games. I want to have a master/slave relationship, not play the creators personal vendetta against THOSE EEEVIL WOMEEEEEEN. Seriusly, im ok with things like goblins or demons, but every time a ugly bastard MC start another ''WOMAN ARE ALL WHORES SO I RAPED THEM AND THEY LIKE IT'' speech i swear to satan i can smell the guy who wrote it from here. I want to enslave woman like a RIPED AS A FUCKING JOJO DEMON, not you average japanese man angry against the UNFAIR female population.
