very true it is rarely ever used in such a way as to enhance the story, it is as you say used mostly as a crutch for poor writing.

exerting power over things is inherently pleasurable. it makes your brain secrete feel good hormones.

but as social animals humans also have strong altruistic instincts to look out for the other members of the herd, to keep them safe and stop them from suffering. one of those is empathy, which is a chemical reaction in our brain designed to cause that altruistic social behavior. it's the backstop for not exerting power over others to hurt them, just because it feels good. instead empathy makes us feel incredibly bad to see others suffer.

so the underlying reason for enjoying rape fantasies is the same as why fictional violence in general is massively popular in mainstream: it's a safe way to experience dark power play fantasies without endangering anyone. in an action movie no one is actually hurt. in a rape story no one gets actually raped. but you still get the pleasure of exerting power.

for most that certainty of not hurting anyone is a requirement to even enjoy it. that's what fantasy brings on the table. it gives you the internal permission to enjoy dark things, which is predicated on your empathy not kicking in. it being fantasy allows you to explore the pleasure of power WITHOUT the things that make it bad and evil. it's eating your cake and saving it too. raping the girl while not raping girls. shooting people while not shooting people. genociding whole interstellar civilizations while not genociding anyone.

it's simulating the part that gives us pleasure, without the part that prevents the pleasure IRL.

to be fair part of the conversation evolved naturally to include the fact that there are some games with inaccurate tags. but from my experience it is being worked on in real time, games i have mentioned have seine had tags added.

Why there's so much rape in the game here? There's another answer next to the ones you already got. The adult game scene is full and full with horny men. More horny men means more coomer-brained stuff. Most rape "plotlines" you find here are coomer-brained.

well i have to set type, i mostly do not care about the protagonist, its more so the story. western or eastern makes no difference(but i have noticed more rapy stuff in eastern games.

that is a misnomer that we humans created.animals consent to other animals all the time. when two bird bond and mate for life year after year...is that not consensual?
rape in the animal kingdom is far less likely then not, as the number of animals who use such tactics is rare (dolphins, otter, some squid, ducks ext. )

It's more about female protagonists. The majority of them are made by men for an audience of horny men, who have porn value or feitsh potential as top priority and don't care too much about a lack of consent. Slice-of-life is maaaybe a little likelier to eventually get forced noncon or dubcon, because the dev is less likely to have a plan where to go and a lot of the tension comes from the protagonist's resistance to sexual options instead of a strong plot.

Doesn't mean you can't find female-protagonist games without noncon, but a hell of a lot of it is yuri. Anyway, a VN that I can guarantee you won't have anything you consider rape is A Summer's End - Hong Kong, 1986.
