If you are running on a laptop make sure the game runs using your dedicated graphics instead of an Intel graphics chip. I had this problem and that was the solution for me.

well in summary, the long line of (among other things) performance optimizations from iirc version 1.34 or so, up to most recent, lead to increasing performance issues. there's something at the core of it i guess.
