Would you play a visual novel with AI generated art? [Poll]

Would you play a VN with AI generated art, assuming said art looked good and consistent throughout?

  • Yes, I think that sounds cool!

  • Sure - I don't care whether a game's art is AI or human-made

  • No, because I think AI art is unethical

  • No, I dislike AI art for other reasons

  • Only if AI were used purely as a supplement (image-to-image rather than text-to-image)

  • No, because I think AI art looks bad/generic/inconsistent (I WOULD play it if the art looked good)

While text-to-image AI alone probably still lacks the consistency needed to illustrate an entire VN, there's genuine potential when AI is combined with human input, such as transforming existing 3D graphics into a 2D style.

If a developer did manage to pull this off, releasing an erotic VN whose sprites, CGs, and backgrounds were all created with AI or AI assistance, how would you feel about it?

Note that I'm not saying that the ENTIRE visual novel, the writing, story, etc, would be generated by AI - just the visuals.

EDIT: THIS IS NOT MEANT TO BE A DISCUSSION ABOUT THE END QUALITY OF AI GENERATED ART. If you don't believe that AI is capable of creating good art for a VN at all, put aside those gripes for this discussion.

Assume that the hypothetical VN in question looks perfectly great, with the only sign that it's visuals were AI generated being the fact that the developer publicly states as such. This might mean imagining a theoretical future era of AI, or even a fictional one; I implore you to do so.

Would you still avoid said VN on principle alone?

I would but I don't think it'd be an interesting game albeit there are endless possibilities with AI generation there are also many restrictions when it comes to an artistic touch for a specific point. However, AI generated art can be used in certain situations like background images, flavor images etc.

I care about the resulting product, not how it was made. Right now I doubt it would be all that good, but in principle, once AI gets a bit better, I see no problem. There's no inherent difference between a neuron brain and a semiconductor one. I also don't value water- and oil-painted lewds over digital art, even tho it requires a lot more effort, skill and time.

Being an artist or entertainer should not be a privilege over being a factory worker - you don't get to artificially eliminate or restrict competition and automation just so you can feel needed.

I probably wouldn't go for it. I'm fine with AI-generated art in general and think it could work quite well for one-shot images (such as Village A standing art, backgrounds, or a couple you spot dogging), but it lacks the consistency I would want across multiple scenes featuring the same characters.

Sure thing if it looks like manual correction work was done on it, no problem.
Art is not even the primary factor that determines whether i choose to play a game or not.:coffee:

No.

Maybe one day, when it actually has good results, made by people who know what they are doing and not just lazy basterds who don't want to put effort into making art, and trained in an ethical way.

I suppose you could be upset finding out they didn't make anything, but the issue is going forward it will only become more common and, more importantly, better. It's like if the content is JUST as good as non-AI content, you wouldn't even be able to know. The moment it reaches that point arguing over it becomes more of a guess how much AI THEY use argument.

I'm practically a crotchety old man at this point, so I'll absolutely avoid AI games on principle alone. At this point that's quite easily said, well, because the AI is trash - no matter how much people rave about it.

If I was ok with AI art, I'd probably also play those html VNs/games which feature a schizophrenic assortment of porn pictures from the internet. The issue with the AI art right now is the same. Not only is it crap, but it becomes very hard to create a cohesive artistic vision/world with randomly generated shit.

When the AI is so good that I can't tell the difference, then maybe we will be having another conversation.

I've never used it or played a game that used it, but I'm seeing some impressive stuff being made with Midjourney.

I really don't get what's impressive about stuff like that. It's like automated photoshop, but shittier looking. That's the thing about AI art, it's only "impressive" when you consider that it takes zero effort. Compared to actual art or even competent photoshop work most of it looks wrong or shit in some way, which leads to the insincere question this thread asks:

Would you play a VN with AI generated art, assuming said art looked good and consistent throughout?
Assuming that would also assume we are living in the future and I don't mean next year.

True enough. I just see stuff like this and imagine the possibilities for entire deepfake-focused games and real-porn games in general, instead of them being a smattering of filched jpegs. Then there's the fact that the standards for this industry are quite low as it is, it's not like many games get high-quality custom art.

I mean I guess, but I'd take mediocre Daz renders over AI art any day.

Most VN's I've enjoyed have some form of specific style which currently AI art lacks the capability to do as it, by design, is pretty homogenous. It also, somewhat paradoxically to my past point, it also would take a surprising amount of work to have the same character in multiple poses/expressions and look congruent.

Once (if ever) AI art reaches the point where it's unique and varied enough then maybe, but as it stands I find it firmly in "placeholder" tier.

perhaps when I signed up here, I would have given a different answer, then I saw many works by people who used artificial intelligence, and now I've changed my mind... so no I wouldn't do it, and those who work there don't hate me, but I find it unintelligent and very artificial.
