I have played a few games in the past where it's treated as though you're looking to have a single love interest at the end, but you can play the field in the beginning to get a better understanding of who all the characters in the game are, that at the end, if you manage to play your cards exactly right, has a harem ending. Not exactly the same feeling as a game where you're building a harem all the way through, though.

Until recently (by that I mean the last 5 years maybe), that was the only kind of "harem game" I'd seen, and I think it's still what a lot of people are expecting when they see the tag. Both ways can be fun, but the version where everyone involved goes in with open eyes and is okay with what's happening from the start is really growing on me.

I haven't come across many like that (one or two come to mind off the top of my head), but (and I might have to turn in my perv card for admitting this) I am pretty new to this style of game.
If it wasn't for Covid, & Steam changing their stance, I might have never found them. I only found this site because I was scrolling through Steam looking for something different and came across the newish VN section. Someone mentioned getting their copy of whatever game it was (can't remember atm) here, so I wandered over to see what it was all about....haven't really left since then
Before that; porn was porn, and games were games. Sure I saw the adult mods for some of my favorite games, but I am not really tech savvy, so getting them installed & working just wasn't worth the hassle.

Yeah I definitely prefer this way of things over the MC playing the field and kind of "secretly" fucking a bunch of women on the side. And only at the end do they all realize that.

Games where MC has a wife or girlfriend that is ok with or even wants MC to be with other girls is an approach that I love seeing.

Games where MC has a wife or girlfriend that is ok with or even wants MC to be with other girls is an approach that I love seeing.

In my experience it's more that everyone realizes they're not in a committed relationship yet, but the expectation is that "soon" the protagonist will pick just one person. The "harem" ending usually ends up being that the protagonist realizes they can't choose, and somehow everyone winds up being okay with it. Generally it's the toughest ending to get. Often, if you try for this ending, and mess up, you wind up with a "bad end" of some kind, or you wind up with just one person anyway.

Everyone thinks differently, has different preferences and tolerance thresholds. I would say I am an adult with my 50 years of life experience, but I still get annoyed about odds and ends on a regular basis. Just because someone (Kimmy) is young and inexperienced doesn't mean you have to forgive everything at once. If someone treats me like an ass without my fault, then despite my biblical age I can be very unforgiving for a very long time.

Ask my mom, who I've only talked to for about 30 minutes in total over the past 32 years. In her case, of course, it wasn't just about the little things.
