We are very lucky to see the release of this TF game at all, considering the creator died a year ago, and some collegue/friend/aquantice picked up their project to make what they could of it!

I keep getting a bug during the boss fight with the mechanical hands that softlocks the game. If anyone else has been playing this do they have a save file that's past that / have any advice?

You should ask in saint gear force thread, there they discuss this game too and the trial stops at second boss nothing else after that

how do i do this without winrar its a zip file for me and i get the same error in the same place

If you change system locale to Japanese then any zip program can do it. This requires a restart. If you want to avoid restart and avoid installing a new program, you can use this standalone tool:
You must be registered to see the links
Which works by just drag & dropping the zip on top of the icon, which is same as "run this program, passing this file as argument to it".

Probably will released late next year, if were lucky maybe a lil sooner the game looks like have a turn based combat too with custom ui and h battle.
