I agree it is a big number. But he can increase his engagement by gradually introducing his new game and FB moves closer to its end. No need to end one to start another. He can to small updates of his new game initially and get feedback. His patrons already pay for FB so they will just be getting a free game to try on the side. If it is successful, DM can successfully move to closing down FB and focusing on the new game. This way he has already established a market for his new game.A new game can be a bust. Probably will, since most new games are not financially successful. 1500 patron is not such a little number. Let's say 200 out of them pay 30 dollars. It's 6000 dollars. Let's say the rest of the patrons pay 5 dollars. It is another 6500. Even excluding the Patreon fees it is a huge amount of money in Russia. You need to be up there very high to get such a salary. Very few IT specialist earn more than 5000 dollars.
Plus there is very little chance for DM to fail considering his quality is really good and the updates are big and frequent. This itself is a rarity in the 3d games sphere.
Additional DM is not alone, there are others who work with him and get paid from the patron earnings as well. So he might not even be making as much as he deserves for being such a top quality dev. He should definitely try to push towards 2500 patrons.
