That is not really true... you do want ambient occlusion, just not at the default value SFM throws at you—an incoming yapping session for anyone interested in "technical" stuff.
If you pay closer attention to the picture below you can see how the default AO values casts those ugly shadows onto the models.
Now the further step... You can select the models you're using in the scene and do something similar to what was previously done with the camera, but now with override materials.

I've always said that one Unknown Planet should be Samus taking on the full Doom squad in an epic struggle to fully gape her butt but a couple of Licker's amd zombies from the Resi universe would be great.
