I fail to see how your approach does save you any space. Especially as it won't lead to the removal of unused (or duplicate) files. You are just extracting an archive after all.My thing is I make desktop folders by game name and try to drop the unzipped files into those as they update. I don't want memory wasted, and hopefully each update merges smoothly and removes duplicate files. The difficulty arrives when identifying date of release compared to my versions... I hope the developers consider that, when they post the updates so fans, paying fans get the best "bang" for the buck! Else, I have to drop what I think is newest, in a parent folder, then try to delete to trash, play the game see if it works smoothly....
Now, regarding Ren'Py games there is no harm in deleting the old version and afterwards extract the new one. Your saves are (also) stored in a user specific location and carry over to the new version. By dropping version after version inside an old installation you're just asking for trouble down the road. Trying to shift the blame for this to the developers is rather unfair to my mind.
