I'm sorry that's happening to you. As long as you're typing "Deckard Cain", with capital lettering, there's no reason it should be wrong. I can give the code a look and reupload whatever version you're having issues with, but there really should not be any problems... The only one I can think is if you're using a translated version or something and that messes with it.

The translation patches are unofficial.

P. S. I'm doing a massive rewrite of the entire game so far and currently it's in beta available only to Patrons, because I'm not gonna release a half-finished mess to the public. In that one, you'll be able to unlock secrets from replays, so you'll never need to go back if you miss something

Another rewrite again? This'll bonked the saves again then?

It's not "another" rewrite. It's one and only rewrite on a much larger scale than I initially intended. I started it after releasing Chapter 4. There will be a public post on Patreon and itch.io next month to clarify everything. Those who are supporting the game already and/or follow the Discord have a pretty good idea of what's going on.

It won't bonk the saves, because I'll be adding a ton of fixes for those who just want to continue where they left off. They'll just be missing conversation variants.

Also, the ONLY time I did anything that messed up the saves was when I didn't realize I had a newer version of Ren'Py on a laptop that exported the public version of Chapter 4. With the help of some reports, that got solved within a week or so and I re-upped the public Chapter 4 that doesn't have any save issues.

You can check the Patreon. There's some general public updates on the process and what's been going on. I also respond to any questions asked on Discord. I'm hesitant to post information here because a lot of users are jaded due to so many projects being abandoned.

In short, it's going. Slower than expected because I've had to change my work process due to the now much larger scope of the game, but it is going. There's also more newly inserted content than copied content at the moment.

a few clips show, and then I'm waking up in my bedroom wondering where I should go now. Did I get a glitch or is this just the biggest mood whiplash I've ever seen?

Biggest mood whiplash because it was a cliffhanger and with all the discourse happening between releases, patrons waiting etc, I just wanted to resolve it ASAP for them. There will be a whole new segment added in between with the rewrite. You're also sort of getting their experience, because they also woke up to nothing... Except there really was nothing for a few months.

EDIT: As for where to go... Just start going around as normal. See what's going on. (Again, "peak" gameplay that's heavily being fixed in the rewrite now that I'm smarter about it.)

The initial release had a lot of potential but I never got around to any of updates until this past week. I was not disappointed.

I'd say it's about "Why did I come back here" that the game goes beyond merely having potential to actually living up to that potential. And it never really drops in quality after that. (except for that awkward break between "A civil conversation" and "Save Shadow!")

I tried this game, but sadly sandbox killed it for me. I didn't even get far before I lost my interest playing this.

Thanks! I did improve a bunch of the earlier writing, but it's kind of impossible to have weight in a story without some introductory build-up. I'm glad there are people who will stick through that for the payoff.
Everything before Why Did I Come Back Here is just setting up the characters.

Fair point. The "current" (now old) sandbox style was pretty bad. I barely knew what I was doing and that's a big reason for the rewrite, basically a remake.

I'm keeping the sandbox because I want to maintain the feeling of moving through the mansion and interacting with the girls (and it lets me add a lot of side content without having to force it into the story). However, I want it to play more like a point-and-click adventure rather than a dumb event hunt and point grind. The challenge will be making main story progress as intuitive as possible with plenty of organic hints, so you're never completely lost.

I can definitely appreciate good set-up even if that means that some of my favorite examples of opening hours in games are often criticized by others for being "boring" (Zelda: Twilight Princess and Suikoden V come to mind)
