This should have been marked abandoned long ago - they've done nothing substantial on it for years

Part of the issue is that the abandoned tag is inconsistently used and relies on individual forum mods to apply it. So, they have to know it's abandoned / how long since an update, what counts as an update (sometimes news posts count, sometimes not), and so on. It's likely a pain to try and track literally dozens or hundreds of threads for if it counts as abandoned.
