I'd say just experiment a bit. If it doesn't unlock after working for Bertha some more then try it the next day.
question, is it possible to continue the rest of the game as a female, or must you return, cuz it seems like stuff like the shrink potion doesn't work as a female and i can't give gifts anymore..., so how do you manage to get all the scenes?

The Genderswap potion is both repeatable and expensive; if you want to be completionist, you're gonna have to make due with ensuring you have enough cash lying around to swap back and forth. Be prepared for a lot of sweeping and/or gambling.
or be like me and cheat the cash in.
