Best way to manage expectations about AVNs is not to have any. Their progress is wildly unpredictable since many/most are not full-time jobs but side projects.

last part isn't true, if a game gets tagged abandoned, the dev can't demand it's removal, it's kept until a game update is released
The tag is automatically removed by the staff if there's an update, but devs can ask them for removal as well if they are active on the site and working on their game. Recreation, the dev of Bad Memories, for example, has done so multiple times. Otherwise all of their games would have been marked as abandoned despite they being active on these forums.
