No, I haven't played the game since. Maybe I'll play it again when NTRMAN bothers to fix a multitude of bugs.
The only thing I can suggest is to start a completely new save
I just redid the whole day from my last save. I waited a moment before paddling during the race as well and I didn't auto lose. Hope that helps.
