Lately I have noticed more and more that the tone towards the developers here in the forum has become much more aggressive regarding release dates or the lack of those. I can of course understand why you would prefer to have an update today rather than tomorrow, but honestly, apart from unnecessary stress and anger for the developers, what has that ever done? I can now understand very well why many developers avoid this forum like the plague.
Well, I am sure I am not the first fairly long-time user here that has noticed that updates for nearly all the better quality VNs here have been drastically reduced in frequency for nearly all devs. I remember when nearly all the best VNs here, except for the famous bad examples I won't mention here, updated about every 3-4 months or less. But more and more devs are moving to the 6 months+ cycle, and quite a few are on the year or more cycle.
Certainly any dev can do what they want, and making games is quite a lot of work, but I do think that anything over 3-4 months is pushing it, with 6 months being, in my mind, the absolute upper limit of reasonableness if you are accepting money for developing a game, and only if there are unusual circumstances.
But of course, there are exceptions to every rule. If you don't have a working computer, you can't render, or if you have medical or other family issues that keep a dev from working on a game, that is just the way it is. Real life is always more important than any game.
But that is just one person's opinion. As long as devs are being honest with their fans about what is going on with their game, and not making an endless amount of dubious excuses (not the case with Rec of course), or being silent for months at a time, I don't feel it is my place to complain. Certainly outright hostity, or assigning nefarious motives to any particular dev, completely without evidence, is not helpful, and probably does more than anything else to discourage many devs from continuing with their games.
But ultimately, Bad Memories, along with handful of other games I keep a close eye on, is of particularly high quality, in terms of its characters and story, and a lot of fun to play, so we should all just be thankful that Rec decided to create it in the first place, so all of us can play it, despite any unforseen delays.
