Different mothers, that's clearly stated. But to be perfectly honest, I don't remember if Ellie's father is the same as the MC's. Was it left a bit vague perhaps?
I should have been a little more careful how I phrased things in previous post.

I don't see that stepfamily stop being family if your blood mother/father dies anymore than the rest of your family does. You're only related to the rest of your family through your parents too. If your father dies, his brothers and sisters don't stop being your aunts and uncles, and his parents don't stop being your grandparents if they are still around.

She was never step anything

She was only a fuck toy and punching bag for the dead father. Never married. Never stepmom. Ellie was always blood related to MC. The "patch" for this one is super duper DUMB!

depending on the state they are, they could have been in a common law marriage.

The MC talking about being gone for so many years makes me think
that I moved away like that as well. Went back for a visit ~12 or so years later and was
truly surprised how 'almost' lost I got several times... lol Wasn't even that big... 40k people....

Very few US States do that and they do not do it against the will of the parties. No one asked to be married, so no one was married. Also it may well be a NON-USA location since the dev is German.
