You can't yet. There is an upgrade button next to every building that can be upgraded on the village management screen. There isn't one for the forge yet.

You choose this dialogue option:
"What happened to Lady [elaria] after her parents were slaughtered by the hordes of Queen [kramis]?"
Then, you improve your skills in stealth with Aurora and you can go back to Pontheugh and meet Elaria in her chambers.
tbh, that probably doesnt make it for to many people, the majority sees the harem tag and expect to see the mc marry multiple women.

I can't seem to get Maery to pop up in the longhouse or do anything else with Pontheugh besides sneak to visit elaria
That's odd. In version 0.3.1 Maery should always be in the longhouse in the morning. No conditions at all.
This script should fix the second issue you've mentioned.
I dent understand about this game mechanics, its says pray for 6 days 6 nights and no shit happen when click on travel.
The game is played in turns of one week. So if you prayed for six days and six nights, that's one week. You can't travel in the same turn. Advance a turn.
And when you talk to her, she tells you to advance more in the game before asking her again.
The idea is that quest 03 can't be done too fast in the game.
So, you have to meet Elaria in her bedchambers first to unlock hunting.
