I've said it before, I'll say it again.
This is a very important decision - maybe
THE most important decision in the game:

Trust me. You'll need to be nice to this douchebag with the 50s-style hair (50s in what country, IDK) if you want any hope of getting your old job back when DPC fucks up the MC's life at the end of the story as a result of all the wrong decisions you made along the way.
Oh OFT. I agree with you about the choice of Steve Major. I have some theories and speculation about it, but nothing concrete. This decision is obviously so trivial and insignificant as portrayed by DPC that probably exactly what Isabella once told the MC in EP2 applies. Reverse Pschyology.
DPC himself has written in such a way that seemingly unimportant decisions have no impact at first, but become important later. As you correctly note, Steven has a haircut of 50. Quinn refers to Josy's dance in EP5 as a 70s dance. Neil and Lynette's story takes place in the late 90s, and the calendar on Maya's closet shows us 2017 and 2020, which are the 10s and 20s of the 21st century.
1950: Grandfather or grandmother
1970: father or mother
1990: Josy, Maya, Sage, Jill, Tommy, Rusty, MC, etc.
2017-2020: presence of Josy and MC working in the store.
Now the only question is why Steve is filling up the applesauce in aisle 9.
The question I ask myself is how long has the tradition of cum petition been around? I assume this tradition predates the existence of the DIKs. That could then explain the applesauce over decades.
Steve, the little freak, knows quite a bit about B&R. Did he maybe go to this college once? We don't know his age, so it's possible. Maybe he once had to prove himself on a cum-petition? Possible. But now we know that this is probably the first time the HOT's have done such a cum petition of EP2. Accordingly, Steve's will have had a Pink Rose Girl on his lap during his cum petition. Who's got a kid again?
This has everything to do with apples. But more on that in another post, because otherwise I'd go beyond the scope.
