VN - Ren'Py - Being a DIK [v0.10.1] [DrPinkCake]

The fact that this game got rated so high is a clear proof that people on here have absolutely zero taste. The writing is worthy of a 12 year old and I can't believe how many people actually support this. It does not even have voice actors and only uses free assets! This feels more like people are trying to satisfy some kind of college fantasy.

All characters are just bland and don't have anything going for them. I can predict what is going to happen from miles away. Nothing exciting is happening and this feels more like some kind silly drama.

The reviewing rules specifically state to not mention other games in your review.

Fortunately, I don't have to since this is the best game on the site. That's all there is to it. It's better than all the other games. Play it now if you haven't.

Renders are good, animations are good, dialogue is good, pacing is good, story is good, length is good, minigames are good, in fact, I'd have to struggle to think of downsides, but they'd just be minor nitpicks overalls.

Character diversity is great, there's almost something for everyone here no matter what your preferences are.

This VN has basically ruined every other VN for me. It's almost frustrating how horrible everything else is now because they have to be compared to this game.
Everything else either sucks in comparison or is still too early in development to tell.
Could go into detail but everything has already been said countless times. Why are you even reading a review at this point? Just play it. Support the creator later too if you want.

- I think more than a few people share the same sentiment as me when I say the long wait was not worth it and it all but killed my enthusiasm for the game. Maybe even for all college-themed VNs in general.
- Most of the LIs just seem like they're reverting to become Maya. Maybe in an effort to make her seem more likeable. I don't know. I just think it's lazy writing and after 8 episodes, DPC has started to wane in writing characters that aren't just basically the same person.
- The "side" characters seem more interesting and fun by comparison now and there weren't that many different things for each path in ep 9 so it kind of seems like there's not much point in having had to choose a main LI in ep 8.
- it pokes fun at how stupid pseudo politics are but with each episode, it's starting to creep in more and more

This is still probably one of the best VNs and it brought a new standard for VNs but at the same time I feel like this has jumped the shark and the increasingly longer dev times don't help in maintaining interest. Especially since newer games have come out that have completely blown this one out of the water.

I did something over the last couple of days that I never thought I would do. Something I may have scoffed at when i first started playing games with adult content.

I actually sat down and played through this game, and took my time digesting its story.

I never thought those words would come out of my mouth, but here we are. Im not sure what suddenly possessed me to do so. Maybe it was because I had never actually given a shit about any adult visual novel and just wanted to get my rocks off, or maybe I actually wanted to see if there was actually a compelling narrative here. Whatever the reason, I sat down and played it.

Before I give any thoughts I want to get the fact that the game is still in active development out of the way. Of course my thoughts could change at any point (especially on some of the characters), but I wanted to talk about my thoughts and feelings after ACTUALLY playing an "adult" game all the way through without being horny about it.

I am honestly shocked at how good the writing can be at times. There are characters here that at first read as stereotypes (Sage, Derek, Cathy, Josy, Maya, Chad, some other minor/side characters), but have a deeper complexity underneath. They subvert your expectations in smart, clever ways. Not to outsmart you, but to build these characters up into something more. I also really enjoyed how the narrative keeps you guessing what will happen; especially in season 2.

Another complement I can give this game is its music. Sure a lot of it is unlicensed, or if it is its by pretty unknown artists, but its used effectively. Season 1 has a few moments of brilliance in this regard, but it really starts to show in season 2. A lot of the songs I find myself enjoying outside of the game.

Lastly, the minigames and free roam events are well done. They arnt groundbreaking by any means, but do help spice things up. Adding an option to disable the mini games is great touch.

Its not all great though. While the writing can be great, there are a few blunders. Jill, Isabella, and Jade feel the most derivative in terms of writing. It feels like the seeds of deeper characters are there, and maybe they will start develop into more complex characters in later episodes, but for now there is nothing nuanced about their characters.

The whole drug subplot is totally ridiculous, yet it is completely uninteresting. Anytime it pops up I IMMEDIATELY skip it. It adds nothing to the plot currently, and has characters that I genuinely dislike.

Overall, I am kind of shocked that I like this game as a game. There are some noticeable problems with its somewhat inconsistent writing and characters, but I overall think that DPK is on to something here. Most games in this style have throw away stories thats only purpose is to peddle out erotic animations. Can you treat this game that way? Of course, but this is also a game that is doing a good job of keeping players engaged in its narrative. DPK stands out as a developer who wants to do something more than just a soulless game with erotic animations.

This turned out to be a whole lot longer than I thought it would be, but I figured that it could be fun to share my thoughts.

Shit, this is actually written well!
Many main characters are deeper and more complex than they seem, the themes are treated pretty extensively overall, the comedy is good, and the cliffhangers are MY GOD DR PINKCAKE I HATE YOU!

Now whenever i see a bad movie or book, i can unironically say that there are porn games with better writing.

This WEG is surprisingly fun. There's a variety of different paths you can go and the dialogue options seem to match the paths which is nice. The worst part of this game, though would have to be the 3D models, retardless it's still fun.

Really beautiful game. Great stories and great animations! A good job has been done by the developers and I really hope they continue with the same quality in the next chapter!
Recommended for all lovers of the genre

It looks amazing, but it is the story - well-paced, engaging, and with an underlying thematic exploration of the meaning of family - and the characterisation - as good as anything I've seen, with a big cast of different individuals - which really make this stand out.

One of the few games where I genuinely can't wait to see where the story goes next.

Came for tits, stayed for the story. I first played this while it was only 2 chapters, which is what, 2-3 years age? What a ride.
I don't even consider this a porn game anymore. Sex is there, and there is lots of it. But just want to see where the story is going.

Really involved in the good story, at the end the porn is just an addition. The artwork is great, with many little details, and most of the mini-games at least aren't annoying. So I really like this game a lot and looking forward for Season 3!

I played this game back in early 2020 and found it has the best story, graphics and animation of all adult games I've played

I only vividly remember how this game is so great, but never played it again even after each updates

Fast forward in 2022, I replayed the game from the start and surprised myself how early part of this game still holds up and the later parts is even better with ramped up graphics and animation, BUT THE STORY is 100/100

All choices really mattered for continuation of the story, not simple like :
A. Fuck
B. Not fuck
like most of the games

BaDIK always has a special place in my heart, best adult story driven games I've ever played on this site.

If you're wondering if you should play this game, and like me, was worried if it was just another dumbass jerk protagonist, don't worry. You have the choice in this game whether or not to be a jerk to people. I myself chose to play as the nice guy (in this game it's called "massive chick") and had a blast.

I then went back and played the jerk path and had a new appreciation for a character named Quinn, who I hated in my first playthrough. Even though I rated this game 5 stars, it's not perfect, but I'd be lying if I said that it wasn't an entire tier above 99% of the other games on this website.

Another big issue people may have is the file size. I believe there is a repackaged version that is much lower in size, so if you are even a little curious about this game, try it. Then kick yourself for not falling in love with one of the girls sooner (for me it was Isabella).

I think everyone can agree on the fact that this is a masterpiece and in every way possible the best game of its genre. Period.
Not only does it have possibly the most artful and beautifully crafted renders, but an actual plot that is intelligently written, exciting, humorous and logical. There isn't even any cringe. It's honestly mind-blowing that the writing in this game is about 200% better than in literally any other game of its kind. DrPinkCake is an actual genius.

Just wow. Render are very good and story is awesome. All the girls are very different from each other,the choices have impact on the story and relations with the girls. A game that everyone needs to play.

Best NSFW game I've ever played. Writing is incredible, characters are all fantastic and have depth, music is really well suited to scenes, and artwork is top tier.

The waiter at the fancy restaurant is the best character though, I need him to make multiple cameos.

What a classic, I first played it two years ago, decided to start over again quite recently and it got me just like the first time, the characters are amazing, the renders (even at the beginning) are still top notch, it's well written, but what makes this game stand out is the rythm, the free roaming parts of the game REALLY bring something more, there are not too little nor too many of them and they are fun.

I first found this game and was kind of reluctant to play it. Now I find myself playing it a second time, I really fell in love with this game. I'm looking forward to seeing more from Being a DIK. Thank you for the experience !

This games character interaction feels more nuanced then the Mass Effect trilogy. Literally the only h-game I have replayed just to get more story out of the various love interests. Also one of the few games I have played where I like most of the main cast making it super difficult to choose who to pursue; although I am sure I will eventually have an appropriate save of the ones that I want with the correct setups.

Getting the obvious out of the way, the game has;

- A main storyline actually worth following along with. Seriously, so many games have an absurd storyline that gets blown out of proportion, or a storyline that lacks substance so you just smash click to get to choices and scenes. On that note...

- Pretty great writing. Nearly each new scene, including alternate dialogue choices or alternate dialogue and interactions with the various characters based on your relationship with them and overall DiK status, is worth experiencing.

- Superb models; wide variety of models in game [although all potential partners are thin, there are side characters with differing body sized models. Unfortunately, most of them are played on as a nuisance in some manner, but nothing so serious as to make them too annoying]. While there is definitely an obvious trend with the attractive characters, not every female is is a carbon copy of each other with minor body edits.

- Good dialogue [nothing to egregious or over the top and unbelievable, most conversations flow very well including sex scenes].

- Tons of love interests, of various levels [potential girlfriend, casual hookup, etc].

- Insanely well placed, paced, and chosen music options. Like holy shit.

- Numerous sex scenes, both static and kinetic, with a multitude of positions and options.

- A LOT of minigames. A whole metric shit ton. Individually, none of them are difficult [except the pool game with Josy and Maya on Hard...]. They all play pretty quickly, they are all reasonably unique from each other, and most of them serve a purpose instead of just being a filler [even if it is just an image unlock]. I do highly recommend how to learn to do a 3x3 slide puzzle, tho. It is easy to learn the trick to it, but not knowing how to complete them makes it miserable.

All in all, hands down one of my favorite games I have played over others in its category. Being a DiK is worth your time.

This is a quick review of the game following the release of the interlude before Season 3.

A really excellent outing, with a main character who knows how to pursue women and be a "chad", while still being a decent person and respectful partner. Great renders and situations, appealing characters, S-tier work all around - though it should be noted that I skipped the minigames, so I can't speak to their quality. I really appreciated both the breadth of choice and the game's expectation for you to eventually commit to one route, I'm looking forward to subsequent playthroughs.

Unbelievable that this is the work of one man.

(My one relatively very minor gripe: If you're on the left side of the political spectrum, there's a few eyeroll worthy characters and scenes, but let's be honest, if you're on this site you should already be expecting that.)
