This has been discussed quite a bit and it's obviously not easy to keep up with everything, but people did initially think that it could be her until it was recalled that during the scene in ep 2 where Chad is on the phone to his lover, Melanie is in the gym on the treadmill so it can't be her.
I'm probably way out in the left field with this theory but...
There's equal amounts of evidence for almost every girl in the game, ie. none. I say almost because we can rule out Sage, Maya and Josy and, if we go with the gay theory, MC and Derek but pretty much everyone else is fair game.
sage phones MC saying Chad is on the phone with the girl he’s cheating with. Tells him to go to the gym. When you get to the gym Melanie isn’t on the phone and Chad is.
For such a scenario the dev would probably have MC suffer performance issues when he did finally try.
I hope that doesn't become the case but damn what a scene that would be if DPC pulled that off or perhaps with the Jocks it was intended as a prank and goes horribly wrong. Damn all these negative thoughts are no good.
That would be heartbreaking for the MC if that was to happen but it's certainly something that would play on the devs mind no doubt about it.
The helmet scene is what's had me worried I always felt that scene was some sort of foreshadowing of future events that there could be an incident at the counstruction site with the young guy and Neil helps him but ends up getting caught up in the incident not before he has saved the young guy that he warned.
I suppose we can't really rule anything out, but I think that having the Mom still be alive just adds way, way too much drama in a game that already has enough going on as it is. If DPC does this, it would be something of an overkill of drama and would start to make the game feel like too much like a soap opera with all the different dramatic subplots happening all at once.

And then the MC gets a lot of money but, unlike when he said to Jill that money would help with his problems, it doesn't now.
Thing is anyone can fit those two roles and having her is just... arbitrary. Last we checked she lived clean across the country as a surfer. Now being a fairly substantial drug dealer or sleeping with a college student in a fairly random city relative to her is just too much coincidence.
Could just mean that times were simpler then, and that things such as relationship dramas, family dramas, college frat house rivarly dramas, were not a thing back then. I'm sure a lot of people, when they look back on that time in their life, would also say that they were happy back then too. Not necessarily happier than in the present day, but simply happy, because when you have no responsibilities, your whole future ahead of you, and no major dramas in your life, it is a happy time.
Now you mention it, let me quote the opening lines from the game

Yep. He has an anger streak in him and is probably more than capable of getting angry with his Dad despite how close they are.
The MC did say that it's been 6 months since they last spoke, so her life in San Diego might have collapsed and she was forced to move back home or at least to the surrounding area, like where Maya's from. If this were the case, it would at least put her in the vicinity of Chad for a possible affair.

All that money wouldn't matter it wouldn't replace his Dad although I'd like to see the girls reaction to that who would want to comfort him the most?
