I'm going with the mentally ill theory. She's always cheerful, even if some bad stuff has happened to her, and when something is happening she retracts into her shell. What about Derek? He doesn't seem to know or care about her mental health. There's obviously something seriously wrong with her, but aside from "being even" he seems awfully disconnected with his sister's problems. I know he's not the brightest, but still.
