We have never seen Chad have any interest in a girl, be it Sage or somebody else.
the only time he seems sexually caught is on the phone (in my opinion with a female, but the doubt remains)
indifference towards Sage is certainly remarked, even in the flashback, as if to underline that he is never interested in her

it's not impossible Chad gave some underwear to a guy (some girlfriend gave them to me, even if they always tend to be funny and not sexy)
it is strange but not impossible.
however, the theory of Chad engaged to Troy hardly convinces me too.
but if he is with a girl (Melanie or others) he does not explain the reaction to the blackmail, there must necessarily be something else (a teacher? a very mature woman?)
