I would say it's because Sage started developing feelings deeper than FWB and this development was going on through out the second season, noticeable when they were talking at the HOTs party, when Sage said shewas ready to wait for him.
And when MC rejects her, while she already has feelings, it would be reasonable to slow down things, and MC is lucky that Sage behaved sensibly. If the feelings were much deeper by this point, he would have been left with a few bruises.

Yeah casual's not the best way to describe it, I'd say their vibe is more into doing party drugs (weed, shrooms, ecstasy) to have a good time rather then what Tommy and Quinn are shooting up with.
