Patric, has some hidden "suspicious meter". Based on how you behaved with him when you first meet in episode 7, whether Sage is there at thanksgiving or not , how far you push his buttons during the dinner, and if you punch him or not.
if you messed it up too much, MC will fail to get the contract

Yeah I think it is just that Mel and Sarah are a little more one on one in their scenes rather than lets share this episode. I don't know if it is hinting at them wanting more in the future or just competing with each other.
