They show the characters younger in appearance serving detention together before they grow and mature. Add another 9 months apart before MC’s 19th birthday. They’ve known each other for multiple high school years.
Not to mention, Zoey had been incommunicado with MC for 5 months or so by then, so it is easily understandable that he was looking about.If Zoey left in August then MC had a minimum of 9 to 10 months before he started crushing on Josy. So he was devastated for maybe 6 months before that day he rode around on his bike and changed his phone. Then a few months later he met Josy.
