I created another M&J path with the goal of trying to keep the throuple together.

Chad gave the guitar to Sage. He stole it, even if it was by having Dawe do it. He also lets the Alphas verbally abuse and bad talk Troy. He would let them assault him, too, to keep him on the DL. Troy's a big guy, and can take a punch or two, after all, he assaulted Dawe. That's why he was kicked from the frat.

No my head canon is that troy fought the jocks for the MC's guitar despite being an asshole and is maybe to proud to admit or guilt for not trying hard enough when they meet again in the cafeteria and the Gym.
