Mostly, but some serious movies came out, like Philadelphia. We mainly got lots of campy gay characters in movies like the Birdcage.

Unfortunately, there are many people who do condemn homosexuals. There are quite a few celebrities in the past I've heard of (both Dutch and international) that were in a straight relationship while they knew they were gay, but back then I haven't heard yet of the saying of "being a beard".

Also, the 'college experience' story told here is more in-line with what a Gen-Xer would remember.
Many campuses have clamped down on the hazing stuff, etc.

True, but I'm from the Netherlands. Frats and sororities exist over here, but as far as I know none of them have their own houses like they seem to have in the US.
