I'm sure this has been discussed before, though I haven't found it in the search function.

But I'm wondering...why is the Mara/Josy throuple forced into a binary choice? Either you accept the package deal or go the friendship/later breakup route. Considering how in-depth this game is with all its choices and branching paths, I'm frankly astounded there is no option to simply declare your lack of interest in or desire to pursue a relationship with one of them. You'd think there would be an option to say for example "I have no interest in sharing and only have feelings for 'x'."

Even if the path ends in being shot down with the same result as the "friendship" route, you'd still think there'd be an option to outright state you are only interested in one of them and not as a throuple. Because obviously a relationship dynamic like that would be doomed from the start. I'd have expected at least a dialogue option to express that.

You can express your interest for one of them later. Maybe there's a path there in the future, who knows? :unsure:

Because storywise, MC is into both of them, not just one of them, regardless of player choice. Episode 4 makes that abundantly clear. He spent all summer crushing on Josy, and has been getting closer and closer to Maya since the first day of college.

Even if we had the option to choose only one of them, the one you choose wouldn't dump the other for you, it's too risky. Despite all the relationship trouble they've endured, Maya and Josy sticking together is still the safe bet.

It comes from diddling with them before MC discovered that they were a couple. As soon as MC calmed down and they realised why he was angry, they decided to give a try since they developed feelings for him.

However, it is arguable that it might be possible to go for either of them. On Ep 5, at the Preps' party when Derek is trying to find a fish and whatever, MC can answer he still has feelings for Maya/Josy. Then, in Ep 11, Maya and Josy are vowing to communicate more and revive the flames, but I for one believe it miiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight be a sign of their break-up; it is plausible although it's fairly far-fetched anyway. As I answered in poll #5, question No. 1:

All of the responses I'm seeing allude to future choices or potential paths in future updates that are WAY far into the story. That doesn't answer my question of why the MC has no ability to express this upfront during the initial relationship/friendship choice, or earlier while talking to each of them after the big reveal. Makes no logical sense to me that this option wasn't included, even if it forks into the same friendship route.

And to the one saying the MC is canonically attracted to both - that's prior to the reveal. Compounded with additional secrets kept beyond the hidden relationship, or being led on and subsequently tased (regardless of whether told to do so - that was shitty), or finding out Josy essentially ghosted her other LI without any sort of closure, etc? There is plenty of grievance fuel sufficient to argue the MC deciding to permanently burning bridges.

As you said, it’s early on. What purpose would telling one of them you dislike her serve? They have been a couple for awhile. The MC barely registers as a one night stand or crush for either one. Even if they are having issues, they aren’t going to drop each other at that point in time for him. Why would they? They barely know him. Besides, as shown with his first game, throuples seem to be DPC’s thing.

...what purpose would it serve? I'm assuming there is some disconnect here, though I can't imagine how you're interpreting this differently. I'll try to spell it out again.
Choices are:
1. Enter into a throuple with both of them.
2. Tell both you just want to be friends.

There is no option 3. I am romantically interested in one of you and not the other.

As far as what purpose telling them that serves? Making them aware you are no longer attracted to both, and uninterested in a throuple as a result? As in the binary choice available doesn't fit? Seems clear to me. Not sure why you find no purpose in communicating something like that upfront before entering into a relationship.

Is this choice some kind of joke to you?

Following the Others' path, you can start dating Josie in Episode 12. Until then, if you don't want to see Maya, you'll have to accept that she's taken.
