Pretty much. He started at 12, is currently 19 and has practised on a daily basis. If that kind of dedication is backed by even mediocre talent, there will be results.

There isn't much as of now, but considering the events of ep 11, there should soon be some consequences to the choice. It certainly affected Sally's dialogue in ep 10.

How much effect each choice has varies a great deal. At the moment the biggest impact is probably with the Jade choice, while the least meaningful is easily the Steve choice. But even that one affects the affinity score.

We still need it if we decide not to go on the main girl's route, I think.

Well not need as such. You can still do a lot in an Others run without it, but it does unlock a few scenes. I don't think it's a requirement for any of the girls the way the Jade choice is.
