My issue with MC being a Burg is that it would take a big world and make it small; I have the same issue with Star Wars (I don't need Chewie in Revenge of the Sith, nor do I need Rey to be related to an established Force user, especially as it is long established that Jedi are celibate and using the Force is actually really easy for those with a high midi-chlorian count)
The world of the MC already shrank when he found out that M&J were girlfriends, and it's an even smaller world when you consider that Jade is Tybalt's Mom, Tommy is Josy's step-brother, he formed a friendship with the brother of one of the main LIs, and the MC managed to interact with pretty much every major player at B&R in just his first few days.
This is already a story playing inside a small field, so making him a Burg would just fit in to that.
I'm not generally easily pleased with 'what is popular'....it's popular for a reason, because it appeals to the general masses who usually don't know, or care to know any better. Like my exes son, he refused to watch or listen to anything older than he was. He loved popular stuff though...went with the crowd. His loss I guess. I'm a little harder to please heh. Just because something is popular, doesn't actually mean it's any good I'm sure you appreciate. Just good enough for the generation and demographic it's aimed at. Take modern horror coming out of Hollywood for example....(another opinion).
Well, to part-quote a line from a film series that fits into that category of "popular if not necessarily surprising"; good is a point view. Some people might consider the FF movies good whilst I consider them trash, and some people might not like the Marvel movies but I think they're great. Overloading any story with too many plot twists and shock reveals can bring it down, that's why Lost kinda went off the rails because not only was just about every character hiding some deep, dark secret, the island they were on had about 6 different mysteries as well so it all got a bit too much.
Going with the obvious choice isn't a bad decision because, again, what matters most is the quality of the overall story. Even if there are obvious, formulaic plot twists and reveals, what you feel about the story, the events therein, and the characters is what will determine whether the story was any good. When you look back on it at the end, if the only complaint is that it was a bit obvious at times but overall you loved the story and the characters, well then it's done a good job and is by no means a bad story or does it make DPC a bad writer.

It also doesn't solve the patriarchal issue because there is no set standard for which name goes first

I think that's where my problem lies, i am more of Asian movie lover (C/K/Jdramas). The only movie i can remember having seen with that set up is one with Drew Barrymore i think..and Carrie lol. Well, gonna jump on it a second time, i hope i can get over it and enjoy the game. I can't be the only one not liking it! Thanks for the answers guys.
Never Been Kissed and Carrie are both High School settings. For American college settings, you'd be looking at films like Animal House, Road Trip, Van Wilder, Old School, Bad Neighbors, even Monsters University.
