and similarly, what message should a gay get from Maya and Chad's behaviour? To hide, which is what a moderate homophobe would advise him to do (don't ask, don't tell).
I don't think that whoever defended Maya's father did it seriously, and I don't think that making Maya the symbol of homosexual emancipation will defend her from criticism.
