Until the end of season one in any of the versions, the save files of the previous version will not be compatible with the next version
Which is amazingly incompetent, considering how it's something so basic and important, and what others devs have no problem with for the most part in their games.

As we all know, the structure of linear games is very different from sandbox games in this way. It is reasonable for users to expect save files to be compatible. As it was in the previous non-reconstructed version and the developers emphasized on it to the point where they sacrificed some things once or twice. But in the new version, due to some problems, this compatibility does not exist at least until the end of the season, and this event was predicted and announced from the beginning of construction.
The fact is that you can use the save files of the past. But due to the mandatory changes that are made in each version, these save files will cause errors that will certainly bring more dissatisfaction.
Currently, not much work can be done for this issue. If we don't want to play the game from the beginning, we have to wait until the end of the season.
Or use other people's save files. I personally do not like use save files. But I will definitely share a complete save file at the end of the season, when I am sure there will be no other changes.
I can't do this right now because my save files are from the beta test version, and it's also very messed up.

To be real for one second .. just load the original BB ... yeah Ren'py is a far better engine but this isn't even close to the content from the original ... and i guess in my lifetime it never will be ^^

I go for the other remake personally (Big Brother: Ren'Py - Remake Story [v1.07]). They’ve already got the entire original game and are working on new content. And saves are compatible between versions (at least the direct previous version).

I'm not a programmer so I don't want to be presumptuous or too critical. If we were talking about another game, any other game, I would have already given up after the third time I got the message "It's not compatible, you have to start over". So I want to give a compliment: if I'm starting over for the THOUSAND time it's because I care about this game. But, honestly, after spending years with it... I really hope this is the last time. Because I'm getting bored. Sorry but I'm sincere

In terms of recording the state of the game it's all the same: a group of variables used to store the values of individual elements/quests/plot sub-paths etc. It's not like porn sandbox games are inherently unable to use older saves, plenty of them do it without any issues.

The incompatibility only enters the picture if for some reason developer decides to mess with already established variables and/or structures and how their values correspond with the game state. Avoiding it is just something that should be taken into account in advance, when the game framework is planned. And if this sort of mess happens with every subsequent release, then it's something wrong with the project on fundamental level, even more so if it goes unaddressed and the player is expected to just deal with it.

I confess that i have trouble envisioning how i'd go about designing a game that'd break the saves even on any slightest change or addition. Sandbox or not. In a way, it's almost impressive that this one manages such feat. Well, unless it's just some simple case of checking version and if it's different then rejecting the save, no matter if it's actually incompatible or not. But that would be silly.
